This week, my Travel Tuesday series takes us to Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mostar was one of those places that looked beautiful in photos, but felt much more powerful in person. The turquoise Neretva River, the stone houses, the mountains around the city and the famous Stari Most create a view that is difficult to forget.

What makes Mostar unique, however, is not only the scenery.

The city brings together different cultures, religions and architectural influences in a very small area. You can see minarets, church towers, Ottoman-style streets and buildings from later periods almost next to each other. At the same time, the city’s difficult recent history is still visible, which gives the beauty of the place much more depth.

The Old Bridge is the best example of that. It is not simply a tourist attraction or a good place for a photo. After being destroyed during the war and later rebuilt, it became a symbol of connection, recovery and the ability of a city to move forward without forgetting its past.

Walking through the old town, I also liked the contrast between the busy streets and the calm river below. Mostar can feel lively, crowded and full of cafΓ©s, but only a few steps away you can stop and look at the water and mountains.

I visited with my arm in a cast, which made the heat and walking slightly more challenging than usual, but it also made the trip even more memorable. πŸ˜„

For me, Mostar is unique because it combines natural beauty, history and resilience in one place. You may arrive because of the famous bridge, but you leave remembering much more than just the bridge.

Have you visited Mostar, or is there another city whose history changed the way you experienced it?

@Amanda Barber

Δ†evapi. Are you asking about Bosnia and Herzegovina in general?

Mostar is unique because of the landscape. It's usually over 40 degrees Celsius with no wind, so trust me, you'll appreciate ice there.🀣

Actually that's amount of my photos Screenshot_20260728-175258.png

Sorry I must use translation to Polish 🀣

As you see I have enough content to keep that Series for a long time πŸ€ πŸ˜„

Awesome! There’s a really cool episode of Robert MakΕ‚owicz (a famous Polish chef/food critic) set in Mostar!

@Lukasz Modzelewski

I seen a lot of with Robert MakΕ‚owicz but I prefer Magda Gessler.

At least she throw and break plates from time to time 🀣

Indeed, though I would like to travel there without a broken elbow. 🀣

At airport security, they were sticking something inside me to check if I was smuggling drugs 🀣

I was there back in the '90s and it's nice to see that the bridge has been rebuilt.  The destruction of the bridge was the visual reminder of how neighbor turned on neighbor during the breakup of Yugoslavia and the ensuing civil war.

Glad to hear I can wake some memories.

You know, I'm kind of in that mindset. Every place has its own history, and it's worth seeing for somebody.

It's nice to see how much Bosnia has changed, and despite such a difficult history, people are still much happier than in many places on Earth. 🌎
