Miscellaneous Monday - using emojis with intention!

🍆 Did you know today is National Eggplant Day? (I couldn't find a source, just many references and celebrations of this delicious veggie.) That got me thinking about emoji, and governance!

🔒 In some cases, the first thing I do when I make or inherit an Atlassian Cloud site is to disable the uploading of custom emoji. My job's busy enough without having to ensure my user population doesn't upload something offensive (usually innocently). 😅

That said, emojis are awesome, and do have a place in communications.

Let's say you're an admin of your own toolset. (Maybe you are.)

Are there emoji that you always add to your emoji repository - whether that's Jira Cloud, Confluence Cloud, or some other tool! - what are those emoji? And for what specific purpose or purposes do you use them for?

Curious on how users use emoji with intention! Share your examples, I'm all ears. 🌽

At my last job, my software team appreciated my thoughtful Slack-mojis as responses to their daily standups. Thankfully, we didn't limit the creation of new emojis in Slack, so I could always find the perfect reaction. 🤪 (Benefits of a small, close-knit company!!)

I also love to make sure folks add their favorite emojis to their personal User Manuals so folks know what others mean by their use of emojis.

😅 is one of my favorite emojis, as it can represent a feeling that I can't describe easily with words. It helps when I want to point out awareness of a mistake, with a little bit of humor and humility, or when I want to point out a challenging situation but that's somehow under control...or getting there... 😅

I’m not a big fan of emojis, but I do use them from time to time when it feels really appropriate :)

For me, they’re more like little ‘spices’ in communication – I don’t need them in every sentence, but sometimes they help soften the tone or add a bit of humor. In Jira or Confluence, I’d probably only keep a handful of them, like ✅ for "done", or 😊 whenever it softens the conversation.

Personally, I like when the UI tells you what the emoji means when you hover over it. There are many emojis I don't use on my phone because I'm not sure what their intent is.

Workwise, I use several of the built-in emojis in Confluence when I want to draw attention to a small bit of text without adding a whole note or warning panel. (The problem here is that I should make a record of which ones I use to make sure I'm consistent across all pages. 🙃)

I generally use these: 📝⚠️🛑📌

I like being able to disable emojis completely.

My favorite emoji right now is ✨ Somehow it always feels like magic.

Beside that, in Confluence or Jira, I use few of them, like ✅  or 😊
