Our consulting company is looking to start an internal desk for consultants to work on projects in house rather than on-site at the client.  I am looking for recommendations to facilitate and coordinate the back office environment.  I am hoping to expose project updates through a client portal and am wondering if Atlassian would be a great platform for this?

That's what we do. We use a variation on Agile methodology to deliver our projects, even though our projects are waterfall in nature. There is a definite people process needed in addition to the tools, though.  I think you have that problem regardless of which tool you use. We prefer not to expose Jira issues directly to clients, so we create "reports" in Confluence and include Jira Issues Macros which display the status of issues we are working on. Currently, we export the "report" pages from Confluence as PDF files so they can be shared with the client. Unfortunately, this means that they are not accurate any more by the time the clients reads them.  I have a gleam in my eye that we will one day allow clients to log in to our Confluence so they can see the "reports" real-time, though.  Check my profile for my contact info if you want to discuss more about what we do.
