✈️ Travel Tuesday: Vilnius, Lithuania 🇱🇹
This week’s Travel Tuesday takes us to Vilnius , a capital that somehow manages to feel historic, lively and surprisingly relaxed at the same time.
One of the things that makes Vilnius interesting is how many different layers of history you can see just by walking around. Around the Old Town you move between churches, narrow streets, courtyards, monuments and viewpoints, while only a short walk away the city already feels much more modern.
The area around Cathedral Square and the monument to Grand Duke Gediminas is a good place to start. Gediminas is one of the most important figures in Lithuanian history and is closely connected with the development of Vilnius itself.
Then there are the views. From the higher parts of the city you get this wonderful mixture of red rooftops, church towers, green spaces and newer buildings appearing in the distance. Vilnius is a capital, but from above it somehow doesn’t feel overwhelming.
I also liked something much simpler: arriving at Vilnius railway station and then discovering how compact the city actually is. A lot of the interesting places can be explored on foot, and wandering without a strict plan works particularly well here.
Vilnius also has a fascinating cultural mixture. Lithuanian, Polish, Jewish and other influences have all left their mark on the city, and you notice that especially in its architecture, monuments and religious buildings.
For me, that is probably the charm of Vilnius: it doesn’t need to shout for your attention. You walk around, notice another courtyard, another church, another piece of history and gradually the city grows on you.
