BYOK for Jira premium

Hello beautiful people! 

We are based in EU and we are one of many managing authorities. That means that we are operating under whole other set of laws and regulations than the private sector.

One of those regulations is what type of data we may and may not store in cloud and cloud-based services. Often it means that we need to consider on-prem solutions. Which leads to the whole set of challenges with budget, resources, organization, etc. 

BYOK would be a possible solution to be able to use cloud-based products within the framework of the laws. However we are not big enough for an Enterprise license. The limit of 800 users is impossible for us.

So what I want to ask is if Atlassian is planning/thinking about possibility to offer BYOK for Premium clients or maybe as a add-on.

you might also want to look into Private Cloud next year because encryption alone might not be enough, especially if you are under government regulations if I interpret your post correctly?

As there is no legal precedent yet, there are two main interpretations of the law. Our organization chooses the strict interpretation, which means that everything that is not on-prem is in cloud. Therefore, there are no legal differences between "cloud" and "private-cloud".

I understand that.

Since Isolated Cloud will be single tenant and all data processing will be done within that tenant, this would be an interesting thing to have the legal departments to look at. If you can host it on your own AWS as well, then it might be even more interesting?

How do you see BOYK change this as the information is still in the cloud even with encryption?

From your description, what would the main difference be between an on-prem solution and "Isolated Cloud"? 

To answer your question, it is something we don't have an answer for yet and as this is not a feasible solution at the moment we are not looking into that either.

The main difference between on-prem and Isolated cloud is of course that you use the Atlassian Cloud Platform instead of the Atlassian Data Center Platform.

You still have the problem with the Isolated Cloud solution being a SaaS solution, managed by Atlassian, so you still have all of those things to consider.

Technically you are in a better position legally, but if it will be enough for EU legislation, especially strict ones like in Germany, still remains to be seen.

This is why I am keeping a close eye on this particular area, and why security and compliance in general is something I am very passionate about.

While not everyone will benefit from moving to a cloud based version of Jira, I think everyone should at least have an option to do so. Hopefully, Isolated Cloud can at least be a starting point for that in a near future.
