Let me just clarify a little more:

As a cloud solution, it is secure from the perspective that Atlassian will guard against lost data as caused by them.  

However, they do not protect against data being lost by you.  For example, your cat comes along and deletes all your cards (I had a client who lost all his cards because his "cat sat on his keyboard").  This is on you and you won't get any help there.  

I recommend looking into ProBackup ,this tool backs up your Trello boards daily and you can even back the data up to Google Drive for additional Protection.

If you DO want to download board data yourself, you can with the free plan but it will be in JSON format, which you would have to put through a converter to put into a more readable format.

Lastly, as @Tansu Akdeniz mentioned, there are several tools to export to CSV, I can recommend exports by BlueCat, using Tiny PowerUps Table Veiw for CSV export and Smart Export
