Hi, 2 linked bugs. There is no way to reorder labels. I tried deleting some to get the order I wanted (ie delete label number 2 and I falsely assumed label 3 would take its place). Now when I use the 2 short cut, it asks me to create a new label. I do. I press 2 again. It tries to get me to make a new label again. I've tried refreshing the webpage. The shortcuts completely malfunction after a label is deleted. Please add reordering and patch the deletion bug. This affects both free and non-free versions.
Hi Rebecca,
Thank you for reporting this—it sounds like you’re running into a known issue related to label management and keyboard shortcuts in Trello. Currently, Trello does not support manual reordering of labels, and unfortunately, deleting a label does not shift the remaining ones upward in the shortcut sequence (1–9). This can lead to inconsistencies, such as the one you're experiencing where pressing a shortcut (e.g., “2”) prompts the creation of a new label, even if a label previously existed in that position.
The behavior you're describing—where the shortcut no longer functions correctly after a label is deleted—does appear to be a bug, especially since the shortcut is expected to reference the label “slot” regardless of label name changes. Refreshing the page may not always resolve this since Trello likely caches those label positions.
As a workaround, you can try re-creating labels in the order you want, but unfortunately this requires deleting all and re-adding them from scratch. I understand this isn’t ideal.
I’d recommend submitting a formal bug report to Trello via https://trello.com/contact under the “Report a bug or technical issue” section. Be sure to include browser and OS details—it can help the product team isolate the issue faster.
Hopefully, Trello adds both label reordering and fixes to label shortcut handling in a future update. Let me know if you'd like help drafting a support ticket or navigating a workaround.
