How to setup a scheduled automation to update a custom field (e.g. AGE) on the cards on a board every day? Under the ACTION section, I find no way to access CUSTOM FIELDS.

Hi Fred,

you can update a custom field like AGE via a Scheduled rule — but the action you choose determines whether custom fields are available.

Why you don’t see Custom Fields

In Jira Automation, not every action exposes custom fields directly.

For example:

Edit issue → allows updating custom fields

Some other actions (e.g. Transition issue, Log action, etc.) → do not. If you are not seeing custom fields, you are likely using the wrong action type.

Recommended Setup (Scheduled Rule)

1. Create the rule

  • Go to Project settings → Automation (or Global automation if needed)
  • Click Create rule
  • Choose Scheduled

2. Configure the trigger

  • Set schedule to Every day
  • Enable Run a JQL search
  • Use JQL to define which issues should be updated, e.g.:
    • project = ABC AND statusCategory != Done

3. Add Action → Edit issue

  • This is the key step.
  • Click New action
  • Select Edit issue
  • Choose More options (advanced JSON) OR use the field picker if AGE appears

I assume that you have to update via the "More Options" way.

Best

Hi Jan. Thanks, but...

This is exactly my problem: on your step 3, at the "Select an action"-step, there is no "Edit issue" for me to select.

I am working in Trello - yes?
