So

  1. Open Trello in any Home, not a board
  2. Look for Views... oh, wait...
  3. Open any board
  4. Click the Switcher (aha!)
  5. Select a Workspace (not All)
  6. Scroll down
  7. Open a view, good
  • a) Close it
This brings you back to the board...

or

Can anyone explain this workflow to me?

Hi Nils,

You’ve hit on a very specific UX friction point in Trello’s Workspace Views. The "workflow" you are experiencing is indeed jarring, and here is the technical reason why it behaves this way:

The "Context" Problem:
Trello treats Workspace Views (Table, Calendar, etc. that span across multiple boards) as a "Top-Level" destination, similar to a separate app.

When you close a View: Trello tries to return you to your "Last Active Board." If you haven't opened a specific board in that session, it often defaults to the first board in your Workspace list.

When you delete a View: Since the "URL" you were just on (the view itself) no longer exists, Trello's redirect logic sends you to the Workspace Home/Collections page as a "safe landing zone" rather than leaving you on a 404 page.

Why it feels inconsistent:
Trello is currently bridging two worlds: the Board-centric view (where everything stays inside the board) and the Workspace-centric view (which lives outside). When you use the Switcher to open a View, you are essentially "leaving" the board context, which is why the "Back" logic is so unpredictable.

My Suggestion for a Smoother Workflow:
Instead of using the Switcher every time, try Bookmarking your most-used Workspace Views in your browser or keeping them open in a separate tab. This prevents the "redirect loop" back to the Workspace Home page when you are done managing them.

It’s definitely a workflow that could use some "breadcrumb" navigation to keep users where they actually want to be!
