It looks like I still need access to my work's schedule board when I log in.  I have access when I click on links from Trello notification emails, but don't see how to add/join their board when I log in to through the website.

It could be you that you have multiple workspaces and your homepage is taking you to a specific workspace. Anyway if you click on the "recent" in the top menu, you will see all your recent boards.
