I'm trying to move a card from one board to another, but when attempting it says that there are too many custom fields. No additional custom fields have been added so I don't believe this to be the case. I've tried to Copy the board rather than Move it, but this too doesn't work. Is anybody able to help please?

Hi!

This error is about the destination board, not the card itself. Here's what's happening:

Custom fields in Trello are defined per board. When you move a card to another board, Trello needs to create the matching custom field definitions on the destination board (if
they don't already exist there). If that would push the destination board over its custom field limit, you get this error.

Why you might not see the problem:

  • The destination board may already have many custom fields that you don't actively use but they still count
  • Some Power-Ups create custom fields behind the scenes — these count toward the limit too
  • The combined total of existing fields on the destination board + new fields from the card exceeds the limit

How to check:

  1. Open the destination board
  2. Go to Menu → Custom Fields (or the "..." board menu)
  3. Count how many fields are defined there — you might be surprised

How to fix it:

  • Delete any unused custom fields on the destination board to free up space
  • Check if any Power-Ups created fields you no longer need
  • If you're on a Free plan, the custom field limit is lower — upgrading to Premium increases it significantly
  • As a workaround: clear the custom field values on the card first, move it, then re-enter the data manually

Hope this helps!
