Can't move boards between workspaces

Todd Thomas
March 9, 2026

I'm trying to move a board from one workspace to another.  I'm an admin on both boards and workspaces.  When I try to move the board from one workspace to another I get the following error message:

"There was an error when moving the board.  Please try again later"  see screen shot below with the error message captured in the screen shot in the lower left hand corner.

Hi Todd,

Thank you for the screenshot. Since you are an admin on both Workspaces, this error is likely not about permissions but rather a technical "handshake" issue between the two environments.

Based on the error message in your screenshot, here are the most common reasons and how to fix them:

1. The 10-Board Limit (Free Workspace)
If the destination Workspace (Thomas & Sons - Shop Production) is on the Free plan, it can only hold a maximum of 10 boards. If that Workspace already has 10 boards, Trello will block the move with that generic error message.

Fix: Check the board count in the destination Workspace. If it's at 10, you'll need to close an unused board or upgrade that Workspace.

2. Multi-Board Guests (MBG) Conflict
Trello sometimes blocks moves if there are members on the board who are not part of the destination Workspace, especially if the destination has strict "Workspace-level" security settings.

Fix: Try temporarily removing any members from the board who are not in the destination Workspace, then try the move again. You can re-invite them once the move is complete.

3. Power-Up Restrictions
Some Power-Ups are tied to a specific Workspace's billing or API settings.

Fix: Try disabling any "heavy" Power-Ups (like Jira, Slack, or custom automation tools) on the board temporarily, then attempt the move.

4. The "Incognito" Test
Sometimes browser extensions or corrupted cache interfere with the "Change" button action.

Fix: Open Trello in an Incognito/Private window and try the move there. This rules out any local browser issues.

One final tip: If the move still fails, you can try the "Copy Board" method.

Go to More > Copy Board.

Select the destination Workspace.

Once the copy is successful, you can close/delete the original board. This is often faster than troubleshooting a stubborn move error!

Let us know if the destination Workspace is already at its 10-board limit!
