I would like to set up an email notification to board members when a new card is added to the backlog list. When I go into automation to try and create a rule, having selected a trigger ('when a card is added to backlog'). there is no option on the 'Select Action' to add email addresses in order to action this new rule ?

The "send an email notification" action is indeed available, but it’s tucked away in the Content tab.
Here is exactly where to find it:
After setting your trigger, go to the Select Action section.
Click on the Content tab (the icon looks like a speech bubble).
Scroll to the very bottom of that section. The last option is "send an email notification to [Email address]".
Enter the email address, subject, and message, then click the blue "+" button to add the action to your rule.
