I’d love to see a feature that automatically moves a checklist item to the bottom of the checklist once it’s marked as complete.
For example, when I check off a task in a checklist, it would automatically move below all the remaining unchecked items. This would keep active tasks visible at the top and completed ones organized at the bottom.
It would also be helpful to have an option to sort checklist items so that unchecked items always appear at the top and completed items stay at the bottom.
This would make it much easier to manage longer checklists and quickly see what still needs attention without manually reorganizing items.
Unfortunately you have falledn down the AI Trello trap. The above is completely wrong.
@Emely Rodriguez
Sadly, there is no option to do this using Trello automation. As @Lara Demir - Hipporello mentioned, you can hide the completed items, which in theory does the same thing.
It is possible to move a checklist item to the bottom using the Trello API, the simplest option would be to use Make (make.com) or Zapier to do this. If you want further help with this, reply mentioning me and I will give more of a guide.
Hi Emely,
I completely agree—keeping the "active" tasks at the top of a long checklist is a huge productivity booster. While there isn't a simple checkbox in the settings to do this automatically yet, you can create a very simple Automation (Butler) rule to handle this for you!
Here is how you can set it up today:
Click on Automation at the top of your board and select Rules.
Click Create Rule and then Add Trigger.
Select Checklists and choose the trigger: "when an item is checked in a checklist by anyone."
For the Action, go to the Checklists tab and find: "move the item to the bottom of the checklist."
Click the blue plus (+) icon and then Save.
Now, every time you check an item, Trello will instantly "zip" it to the bottom of the list for you!
A few extra tips:
The "Sort" alternative: In the top right of any checklist, you can click the three dots (...) and select "Hide completed items." This doesn't move them, but it clears the clutter entirely so you only see what’s left.
Manual Re-sort: If you ever want to re-organize the whole list at once, you can click the three dots on the checklist and choose "Sort by State" (though this is manual, the Automation rule mentioned above is the way to go for "Auto-move").
I hope this helps you manage those long checklists more easily!
Would you like me to help you set up a similar rule for when items are unchecked (to move them back to the top)?
