Followup on a live Trello session on project management

Hey all,

I was thrilled to partner with @Brittany Joiner earlier for a live session on Trello for Project Managers! We had a lot of fun talking about Trello and how it can help project managers (as well as a load of basics... and not-so-basics!).

I've been in project management most of my career, and typically the tools involved are (more) than a bit complex to learn or manage (MS Project anyone?). In some cases I've found that is necessary given requirements (e.g. calculating EVMS, complex resource modeling, etc).

Many times, however, you don't need that level of complexity. Which is why I enjoy using Trello! Now I'm just scratching the surface with it... which is why I was excited to work with Brittany on this session. There's a link to it below, but some major take aways from my end include:

  1. Trello is something you can quickly pickup and start using. This is great from a PM perspective as I can quickly get up and running (and managing!). It's also something I'd feel comfortable giving my team to help manage their individual work. They can easily pick up the basics and have a very powerful tool to help manage their workloads and other items.

  2. Powerups - Don't just pick them all! It's incredibly easy to install a bunch of them, not use any and then wonder what the heck everything does. Instead take time to understand WHY you're looking for one before you add them. This helps you narrow your options and pick one you'll actually use. Also, don't be afraid to reach out to the developers for more info / questions.

  3. Columns don't just have to represent a status. You can use them to park questions, indicate the phase of a project or basically anything else... you can also minimize them! I've been using columns to track questions (something I struggle to do in other systems at times) as well as topics for meetings. Having them right on the board makes it incredibly easy to track and address.

There's some links below for y'all - including a link to the recording, as well as one to a Udemy course Brittany and I authored. We'd also love to hear what YOU want to learn or know about! Drop a comment below :D
