As teams increasingly adopt Jira's new List View experience, we've noticed a change that has had a surprisingly large impact on our day-to-day work management: due dates are no longer visually highlighted based on their status.
In the previous experience, overdue items and approaching deadlines could be identified almost instantly through color-coding. This provided a simple but highly effective visual cue that helped teams prioritize work, identify risks, and keep projects on track.
With the new List View, due dates are displayed as plain text without any visual differentiation. While the information is still technically available, the ability to quickly scan a list and spot overdue work has been significantly reduced.
For many teams, Jira is more than an issue tracker—it's a work management platform. Teams rely on visual indicators to quickly answer questions such as:
Without visual highlighting, users must actively inspect dates one by one, increasing cognitive load and making it easier for important deadlines to be missed.
One challenge we've encountered is that users naturally expect this behavior because it existed previously. During adoption of the new List View, several team members immediately asked whether something was broken or misconfigured because overdue dates were no longer highlighted.
The feature was intuitive enough that many users did not consciously realize how much they depended on it until it disappeared.
Atlassian has confirmed that due date color-coding is currently not available in the new List View and has opened the following feature request:
JRACLOUD-98513 – Due dates should be coloured in the new NIN view like it was in List view
If your teams are experiencing similar challenges, it would be helpful to:
Atlassian often prioritizes improvements based on demonstrated customer impact, so real-world examples can make a meaningful difference.
I'm curious how other teams are handling this change.
Looking forward to hearing how others are experiencing the new List View and whether this feature is important in your workflows as well.
