can't log a file: "git log failed with code 128: fatal: unable to read tree"

Hello!
When I try to log any file (right click > Log Selected), I get a blank window and an error:
'git log' failed with code 128: fatal: unable to read tree (followed by a string of characters)
How should I fix this? deleting and resetting index doesn't seem to work
