While checking out the branch from bitbucket through SourceTree getting the error

Have tried with these steps below to resolve the error yet the issue persists:

1. Go to Source Tree folder in File Explorer and delete the Password file.
2. Login to this URL (https://appdevtools.jnj.com)and click on support in the left pane.
3. Click on Reset Captcha for BitBucket.
4. Open Source Tree Application and Click on Tools and select the “Options “in the Top Navigation bar.
5. Click on Authentication.
6. Add Account or edit the account.
7. Enter Hosting Service: BitBucket Server
                 Host URL: https://sourcecode.jnj.com/
                 Preferred Protocol: HTTPS
                 Authentication: Basic
                 Username: Your Username
8. Click on Refresh Password
9. Log in with your JNJ Username: xyz   (instead of NA/xyz@its.jnj.com) and password.

Hi @Thippeswamy, Bhavya [JJCUS NON-J&J]

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

This error is a classic "catch-all" message in Sourcetree, which typically means the application failed to verify the repository, often because of a breakdown in the authentication handshake or a missing underlying Git component. Since you have already tried clearing the passwd file and resetting your Bitbucket credentials, here are the next steps I recommend as an Atlassian Expert to resolve this:

  • Verify Git/Mercurial Support is Enabled
Sometimes, after an update or a fresh install, the internal Git support gets disabled. If you are using the internal version, click Update Embedded Git to ensure you have the latest security patches. Sourcetree relies on this to "talk" to Bitbucket.
  • If your organization uses Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or SSO, your standard JNJ password might not work for Git operations.
  • Sourcetree uses an embedded browser for some authentication flows. If there is a stale "Remember Me" cookie from a previous session, it can cause a loop. Navigate to: %LocalAppData%\Atlassian\SourceTree\ and delete the WebCache folder.

  • If you have multiple versions of Git installed (e.g. Git for Windows and Sourcetree's Embedded Git), they can conflict. Toggle between Use Embedded Git and Use System Git to see if one resolves the validation error.

Hi @Thippeswamy, Bhavya [JJCUS NON-J&J] ,

Can you try using a different path? Something simple as

C:\temp-repo

just to see if that will work?

I do remember having similar issues with some other app when it comes to OneDrive locations, and I had similar errors. The issue was in "OneDrive - <name>" folder, as it contained spaces. 🫤

Although it might be something else as well, it might be worth trying out if it works with simple paths 👀

Cheers,
Tobi
