Hi. I believe I am encountering the problem described in this page:

https://bengsfort.github.io/articles/fixing-git-push-pull-timeout/

At least I get that error message when I try to push files over our VPN. Is there any way I can apply the described fix to my SourceTree installation, or am I stuck?

It should be the Local network firewall or DNS issue, please look at the below articles.
