Are there Source Tree installation alternatives (Win10) due to a corrupted installer?

Last night I downloaded and was close to configuring my Source Tree, however I checked off the wrong boxes due to a slip on the next button. I could not go back to remedy it, so I uninstalled Source Tree but on a second install it apparently had cached the previous undesired settings. In the attempt to solve this problem I went to the AppData folder and deleted as much files related to Atlassian since they were all created within that same hour. The issue was still persistent, so I deleted them from the recycle bin as well, thinking I'd be able to get them back with another dbl click on the installer. Little did I know that was a huge mistake because now I was coming across a severe issue - "failed to extract the installer" - is the immediate dialog box I get upon trying to open the wizard now.

It is so weird the way Atlassian gets setup on the machine it creates files that not even an administrator has access to like the 'hg' in the hg_local folder and well now I just learned about even deeper realm where no man should place foot in; I really wonder whats the deal with these one-time-files.

I did try to use a few data recovery programs, the most effective one was EaseUS but at the expense of 70$ which I can't do. Other alternatives aren't being able to recover any source tree related files so I'm done with these programs for now.

Really hoping the community can help out a fellow dev, there's always the good ol terminal but I just really enjoy Source Tree so if anybody can lend a hand, it will be very much appreciated!

Hi Ruben, welcome to the Community! I'm glad to hear you enjoy using Sourcetree :)

My recommendation for you in this case would be to check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and make sure that the uninstall has cleared all the registry settings and any other SourceTree versions have been removed. Then, reboot your system to make sure the uninstall is complete.

After that, perform a clean install following the steps:

  1. Wipe Sourcetree preferences.
  2. Backup then delete the directory below before proceeding with next step:
    • Navigate to C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local and delete Sourcetree & Sourcetree-Settings folder
    • Navigate to C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Atlassian and delete all Sourcetree Files/ folder
  3. Download SourceTree and install it.

Let us know how that goes!

Cheers,

Ana
