Why do business and IT teams often see SAP projects differently?

One of the most interesting challenges in SAP implementations isn't technical.

It's alignment.

Business teams focus on business processes, priorities, and outcomes. Delivery teams focus on requirements, development, testing, and timelines. Both are working toward the same objective, yet they often view project progress through different lenses.

This can lead to familiar challenges:

  • Business stakeholders asking for clearer progress updates.
  • Delivery teams spending valuable time preparing status reports.
  • Changes in business requirements taking time to reach every team.
  • Different groups relying on different sources of project information.

As SAP programs grow, maintaining a shared understanding becomes just as important as delivering individual work items.

A single, connected view of requirements, execution, testing, and reporting can help reduce misunderstandings and give both business and technical teams greater confidence in project progress.

I'd love to hear from the community

In your SAP projects, what has been the biggest challenge in keeping business and IT teams aligned?

  • Requirement changes
  • Progress reporting
  • Cross-team communication
  • Testing and sign-offs
  • Stakeholder visibility
  • Something else?

Disclosure: I work with the team behind JASAP, an Atlassian Marketplace app designed to support SAP project execution in Jira. One observation we've made is that when business and delivery teams work from a more connected view of the project, collaboration becomes easier and reporting becomes more meaningful.

I'd be interested to hear how your organization keeps business and technical teams aligned throughout an SAP implementation.
