I have learned some really cool stuff here, but the thing that makes me feel really good is that a lot of the best practices suggested, are things I'm already doing. 

Keep your custom fields to a minimum. 

Customize your workflows as needed, but don't go overboard. 

When creating a new project for a new group of users, make sure you get lots of info from them upfront before you run off and design their world.
