Timelines between projects are different

Within my Jira instance I have 2 different software projects. However, I'm noticing that the timelines feature is working slightly differently per project.

When I click into Timelines for Project A, I see a view to create a plan and view all plans:

The timeline is created as expected after selecting the different configuration options:

However, when I click Timelines again under Project A, I see the same view to Create or View a project. Is there a reason the Timeline created under Project A isn't saving to the Timelines view for Project A?

Project B

Project B is also a software project. A timeline has been created for this project, and appears when clicking Timelines when already in the project:

Why when clicking into Timelines for this project do we see a timeline, and not the create plans/view plans screen?

My colleague would like to change the timeline for Project B to include different ticket types that aren't attached to an epic. However, isn't getting the create plan/view plans screen when clicking in Timeline when already in the project. So she is unable to configure the plan for Project B's board.

Hi @Annie Kearns,

These are indeed different timelines. One is coming from Plans (formerly knows as advanced roadmaps) and the other one is the basic timeline that is included with a board in a software project.

Basic timelines - however - are only available if the board in your project only contains issues from a single project. That is (most likely) not the case in your first project. The board filter behind that board will be pulling in issues from multiple projects, which is why you see the message that you need to create a plan to make a timeline.

The board in your second project is constrained to just Project B, I am quite sure. That is why the basic timeline is available there.

If you still want to create a plan for the work in project B, that is perfectly possible. But you'll need to go through the Plans menu at the top of your screen, select "Create plan" and then select your project's board as the plan's source.

Hope this helps!

Hi Walter,

Thanks for coming back so quickly!

Yes you're correct on Project A's filter, this is pulling tickets from multiple projects into 1 board. So that makes sense thank you

For Project B, is there a way to change the timeline view so it also pulls in stories & tasks that don't sit under an epic? We are having difficulty in extending the timeline to include all tickets under the project. Or can this only be done via Plans?

This is project B's timeline view if that's useful :)

You're welcome, @Annie Kearns ...

No, the basic timeline has a nice visualisation, but it has its limitations. Issues without a parent epic are not displayed and that is something you cannot configure.

So indeed, if you don't intend to put all your story or task level issues under an epic, you'll have to get them in a plan to get them displayed on a timeline there.
