Key Strategies for Optimizing Performance in an Atlassian Data Center Setup

Luciano Matteo January 22, 2025

Hey everyone,

I’m currently working on setting up and optimizing an Atlassian Data Center environment for our organization. While I’ve gone through the official documentation, I’d love to hear your insights and practical strategies for improving performance in a real-world data center setup.

Specifically, I’m interested in:

  1. Infrastructure Configuration: What are the best practices for configuring servers, load balancers, and storage to handle high traffic?
  2. Database Tuning: Any tips for optimizing database performance?
  3. Caching and Indexing: How can I effectively use caching or indexing to improve response times?
  4. Monitoring Tools: What tools or approaches do you recommend for identifying and resolving bottlenecks?
  5. Scaling Best Practices: How do you efficiently scale as the user base grows?

If you’ve faced and overcome specific challenges in your setup, please share your experiences!

Looking forward to your input—thanks in advance!

Hi @Luciano Matteo Welcome to the Atlassian Community

We have a cluster consisting of two nodes with a shared database. Clients approach the website and are load-balanced across the nodes.

From a Functional perspective, optimization is mainly done by active housekeeping of projects and their auxiliaries from within Jira. Expect chaos when you extend project adminship to project leads (I inherited an instance where there were 140+ statuses defined).

So you need to take control of the statuses, issue types, workflows and screens, to enhance cross-project collaboration with clear-cut definitions of these vital project constituents. Their meaning and usage should be clear across your company, and you're the main advocate in this.

I hope some technical forum colleagues can shed some light on the technical bits and bolts.

Kind regards,

Dick
