Hello,
I'm wondering to know what is the best practices for the Jira Advanced roadmap. We've started to use it and I'd like to know how other companies have used it.
One of my doubts is:
What is the best approach to the items' hierarchy?
Hi @Felipe Fernandes - It's really in what you can stomach for overhead. Typically your levels above the epic are tied to OKRs so the first question I typically ask is... What type of hierarchy do you have within your organization as it comes to planning?
For example, let's say you have an organization level set of OKRs and then each department has their own subset against those. In that situation, you may want to levels above the Epic. I've also been in much larger organizations where they need 3 or 4 levels above the Epic.
The most important thing is understanding the ramifications of the decision. Each layer will have management overhead. Let's say I have decided upon Objectives and Initiatives above the epic. I would also need to understand the workflow of each, who would be "assigned" each, permissions, etc. These types of questions start peeling layers and forcing discussion because unlike project level issue types, these are going to be cross-functional, forcing teams to think about governance.
I hope this helps
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Now I realized that my Plan didn't have Initiative as issue type.
After adding it to the project as an issue type, I could track them as I do with Epic, with their status scheme and kanban board.
