Can you group issues by epics in the advanced roadmaps->plan->Program Board?

Hello,

We are using JIRA Cloud and our scrum masters/project/product managers are startign to explore advanced roadmaps/plans. A challenge we've encountered is when using advanced roadmaps/plans->Program (new feature). There doesn't seem to be a way to group issues by anything but team? Our agile teams are struggling a bit when looking at a list of stories in their backlog to identify which epics/features these issues map too. They have to open each one up in a separate tab to to find that information and then drag the issue to an appropriate sprint during PI Planning. I was just wondering if there was some.. setting that we were missing that would us to group the backlog tickets by their parent to give them more context and make it easier to plan.

Hi @scott_gray,

While - according to this introductory article for the program board - the board only has swimlanes by team indeed, it also has filtering options that should allow to filter the issue list by parent (epic), project and issue type (see this support article). Can that be a help to narrow down the selection during planning?

Hope this helps!

Maybe... if we had that option... :( the only filters that I have are: project, type, and dependencies... we don't have the epic option. And I can't find in the documentation if that is an admin controlled setting or not.

There is a comment about being able to use labels and filter the whole program board by a label but having to go and apply a label to all children of an epic, change the board to only include that label, plan those, then change the board to filter by another label to focus on another epic/feature would get very cumbersome IMO.

I just had a look; I had an old board created some time ago in a plan and that board did not have the epic filter in place.

I created a new board and on that one the additional filters automagically appeared as well. Maybe creating a new board does the trick for you as well ...

Hmmm. I tried this and no dice... so maybe it is some kind of administrative setting? I can ping our JIRA admins when they're back from PTO and see if there is something there...

@Walter Buggenhout figured out why EPIC wasn't showing as an option like it was for you. I had filtered out epics as they are not work that we schedule. Once I stopped filtering those out for the Plan then the EPIC field appeared as a quickfilter. It's now more useful but would be better if we could sort them in the backlog by epic like it does for Team.
