Extreme Slowness When Accessing Jira Over VPN (OpenVPN)

srikanth.budida December 30, 2024

Hi Community,

We are using Jira for project management in our organization, and I experience extreme slowness when accessing Jira over OpenVPN.

Here are some details about our setup:

  • VPN Type: OpenVPN
  • Jira Usage: Primarily web-based access
  • Observations: Jira works well without the VPN, but once connected, the response times increase significantly.

Could the VPN's encryption or routing be causing this issue? Are there any best practices or configurations we should consider to optimize Jira's performance over VPN?

Any insights, troubleshooting tips, or suggestions to improve this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help

@srikanth.budida

Welcome to the community.  In addition to what others have suggested, it is the best that you work with your networking team + contacting OpenVPN vendor for technical support and troubleshooting.

It is worth to clear out all of your browser local cache and shutdown/restart the MacOS machine to rule out if the problem is only isolated to the machine.  Lastly, have you also check to see if you are connected via wireless or direct connection on the machine in question?

Hope this also helps.

Hi @srikanth.budida

Is this on the Cloud? If so, the problem lies in the OpenVPN settings or resources. Since Jira works well without VPN, the problem is the VPN itself.

Check this with your Network/IT admin. To determine the bottleneck, you will need to track the VPN's network performance and the VM or server resources or anything related to that.

Regards

Aaron

Hello @Aaron Pavez _ServiceRocket_

OpenVPN, but the issue is specific to macOS. On Windows devices, Jira works fine over the same VPN connection.

Issue: Slowness on macOS only when connected to the VPN. Windows devices do not experience this issue.

Could you provide guidance on the following:

  1. Are there known performance differences or issues with OpenVPN on macOS compared to Windows?

  • Are there macOS-specific configurations or optimizations to improve performance?
  • Is there any recommended troubleshooting for this kind of platform-specific slowness?

We are encountering significant slowness when accessing Jira (a project management tool) over OpenVPN, but the issue is specific to macOS.

Hi!

> Could you provide guidance on the following:

Sadly we can't. We look into Atlassian issues, not other app issues like Open VPN.

Please reach out to Apple or Open VPN support for that.

Unless someone else in the community is experiencing the same and can contribute to this.

Regards

Thank you, @Aaron Pavez _ServiceRocket_ , for the clarification and quick response. I appreciate your time and suggestions. I'll reach out to Apple or OpenVPN support as advised and also keep an eye out in case others in the community have experienced something similar.

Thanks again!

Hello @srikanth.budida ,

I do experience this issue as well with other applications from time to time;

In order to troubleshoot this issue further, have you tried a different server/location?

Could you perform a network test as well to pinpoint the source of the issue?

Concurrently, do reach out to the OpenVPN support in order to explore the cause.
