We are using a POP/IMAP server for a project. We are just starting with Jira so a usual workflow is for an administrator to create an issue on behalf of a user's request. Jira then sends a notification to the user and the Helpdesk people, e.g. "SR-310 Test email reply"
The user can now reply above a marker. The subject will now say, "Re: SR-310 Test email reply," and a comment will be added to the issue. So far so good.
However, after a few back and forth messages between the Jira issue and the user, an extra, spurious issue into the subject like, "Re: SR-215 Re: SR-310 Test email reply." After this, all emails are not added to the comments and the conversation is lost.
Anyone have an idea of what's going on?

P.S. - The extra project issue numbers are cycling step-wise through our closed issues. The project isn't creating new issues, but it is similar.
