My team currently uses Insight / Assets to manage our hardware inventory. We use a "Contact" field to assign assets to specific users as assets are deployed. We're looking to add the ability to query and sort assets based on which team the assets were deployed to. Insight pulls user name and email information from AD, but as far as I can tell, it can't pull a user's associated team information from AD.
Ideally, we'd have a secondary field for "Team" that would automatically populate when the "Contact" field is updated with a new user. For example, John Doe is on Team A. If I were to go to an object, change the "Contact" field to "John Doe", the "Team" field should auto-populate "Team A". The result of this being that I could later query all assets assigned to "Team A" and it would return all of John Doe's assets as well as all assets assigned to other members of Team A.
We could create this "Team" field and manually assign and updates teams on an ongoing basis, but with thousands of assets this would be a large lift up-front and would be difficult to accurately maintain over time.
Has anyone else created or explored similar functionality? If this is not possible in Insight, are there any third-party plugins that could improve AD integration? We're also open to alternative ideas and solutions. Thank you!
