Adding Mailhandler gives NullPointer

Dave S October 2, 2019

Migrated a Jira Core/Service Desk (7.5.1/3.x to 8.4.1/4.4.2) from a Windows Server 2012R2 to 2019. Am having some issues with email configuration though.

Originally had it setup so any emails to the system account would add or update an existing issue. I re-defined my email account connection (Imap over SSL to Exchange; that tests fine). When I "Add incoming Mail Handler" I can point to my IMAP account using the "Create a new issue or add a comment to an existing issue" fine (using the default INBOX location.

When I get to the next screen, I'm specifying the Project/Issue Type. Ive been setting the capture email to the email address specific to the system; and I'm not creating new users (they are created via AD sync). Default Reporter is set to the admin.

After purging old email from the INBOX; I can Test the handler it reports OK (ive got one email in there). When I click on ADD; The dialog disappears; and Jira shows me my new handler with a server location of "Local Files" and Properties "Unknown". If I click on Edit, I get an error window with a NullPointer Exception.

Looking in logs  i see these messages: (atlassian-jira-incoming-mail.log)

2019-10-02 11:04:40,755 ERROR [] Caesium-1-4 anonymous Email to IT Issue Email to IT Issue[null]: You must specify a valid handler class for the com.atlassian.jira.service.services.mail.MailFetcherService Service.
2019-10-02 11:04:40,755 ERROR [] Caesium-1-4 anonymous Email to IT Issue Message Handler is not configured properly for this service. Exiting.

Sounds like some part of the configuration is not properly saving?

So I have re-migrated again into Jira 8.4.1 and this time it worked. I think it was issues with the underlying database... not liking the version of maria db I was on (7.5.1 was fine with it). Now I am on Mysql5.7.26 and it appears happy.
