I am setting up JPD in my new place of work, but the icons for idea type seem to have changed or have some missing. It use to have the story (bookmark icon) and epic (lightning) icons used in the Jira dev boards, but now they don't, is this right or am I missing something???
Hola Matthew,
You’re not missing a setting. Atlassian changed the Jira Product Discovery icon library in May 2026, and the older Jira delivery icons, including the classic Epic lightning bolt and Story bookmark, were removed from the JPD idea-type icon picker. Atlassian described the rollout as “Updated icons for idea types,” intended to give JPD types a broader icon set for opportunities, solutions, experiments, and other discovery concepts.
There’s a recent Community thread about this exact Epic icon change, and the accepted answer points back to that Cloud change announcement. It also confirms that the old Epic icon no longer appears in the palette.
You can still choose a different icon for each idea type under Space settings > Types and workflows, but there isn’t a native option to restore the previous Jira Software Epic or Story icons. Atlassian’s current idea-type configuration documentation is here.
So @Walter Buggenhout's explanation is essentially right, but this wasn’t just an inference about separating discovery from delivery. It was an actual JPD icon-library change that Atlassian rolled out.
Thanks,
James
Hi @Matthew Allen and welcome to the Community!
This may very well be true and I would not be surprised if this is on purpose. When I look at the available icon set for ideas, I get this list of options:
Epic and Story icons are not in there - I would think this is because those are very much related to delivery work. As JPD wants to provide a place for your product backlog and pitches this as something really different from the delivery backlog, it would easily become confusing if you were to use the same work types (and corresponding icons) in both backlogs.
Hope this helps!

I guess it depends how people work. It worked well for me previously as an idea was always an idea to begin with, but then I would promote it to either an initiative, boulder, rock or pebble, with the later two being comparable to an Epic or single story. Worked for us. I'll just have to choose new icons :(
Thanks for replying!
