Ability to add a description to custom field dropdown options

Hi,

If you have a moment, I would be grateful if you could add your vote to https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-79592.

Custom field dropdown option descriptions are often needed to explain further what an option is about and guide the user in her choice. Option labels need to be kept short for obvious reasons so being able to add a description would be very useful.

Cheers,

Julien.

Hey Guys

We're considering building this as a free Forge app. If there's enough interest from the community, we'll make it happen. Drop a like or comment if this would be useful for you.

Already ran some analysis on this. No complexity, just an extra information layer on top of the dropdown options. Would require a new custom field type with an additional renderer though. Quick development, could be released shortly.

if you want to connect for updates on this one feel free to reach out.

regards

cF

Hey I just baked a piece of code into a small app.

What it does is:

it lets Jira admins create custom select fields where each option has a description visible right in the dropdown. So instead of users guessing what "Level 1" or "Level 2" means, they see a short explanation below each option while browsing.

Fully searchable via JQL, works on issue view, create, and transition screens.

if this helps i could wrap it up and submit it for review

best regards

@C_ Faysal_CFcon_ This is absolutely mind blowing! Are the descriptions shown on JSD form fields also?

Oh wait, I misunderstood your question @Julien Béchade

By forms you mean ProForma in JSM? If so, the answer is unfortunately no since there is no direct implementation.

You could map the custom field to a form, but Jira Forms doesn't recognize the custom rendering - it falls back to a plain text input instead of the dropdown with descriptions.

Native Jira dropdowns are not capable of having an additional line below the option label. So what I did is build a string-type field with custom rendering that behaves like a dropdown and displays the description for each option. That's why Jira Forms sees it as a text field rather than a select.

what you can do is add the field to the request type on portal layer. this is what the above screenshot shows...but Forms (former ProForma) is a closed environment

i'm sorry there is no other solution for now

best regards
cF

No, no, you did not @C_ Faysal_CFcon_ . My original request was about Jira fields, I just wanted to know if it also worked on JSM form fields, without much hope, if I may add 😁

Your solution goes already a very long way.

Unfortunately, I am aware of the shortcomings of form fields. I think we will not be able to see option descriptions there unless it is native to Jira.

On the ticket linked in this post, a user mentioned how he’s using assets to get a label and description in option fields as a workaround and a way to manage edit permissions for this fields.

Would you like to see this live in a demo session @Julien Béchade ?

maybe you have some additional feature requests to be added.

let me know if you would need this solution. Happy to share it with anyone who does
