How Atlassian Government Cloud Supports Agencies in Meeting Modernization Mandates

The Challenge

Federal, state, and local agencies are facing unprecedented pressure to modernize their IT infrastructure. Between Cloud Smart, FITARA requirements, and zero trust mandates, modernization has shifted from a "nice to have" to a compliance imperative.

But here's the challenge many of us face: How do we modernize while maintaining security, compliance, and continuity of operations?

How Atlassian Government Cloud Addresses These Mandates

I wanted to share some insights on how Atlassian Government Cloud is helping agencies navigate modernization requirements while maintaining the security and compliance posture that government work demands.

1. FedRAMP Moderate Authorization

Atlassian Government Cloud achieved FedRAMP Moderate authorization in March 2025, which means agencies can deploy Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Management without going through lengthy ATO processes. Instead of spending 12-18 months on authorization, teams can leverage the existing FedRAMP Moderate authorization and get to work on mission-critical projects.

2. Supporting Agile Transformation

Modernization mandates emphasize agile methodologies and improved project visibility. Atlassian Government Cloud provides the foundation for this transformation:

  • Jira enables agile project management with full visibility into sprint progress, backlogs, and team velocity

  • Confluence creates a secure knowledge base for documentation, reducing silos and improving institutional knowledge

  • Jira Service Management streamlines IT service delivery and enables self-service for employees and citizens

3. Secure Cross-Agency Collaboration

One of the toughest modernization challenges is enabling collaboration across agencies, contractors, and different teams. Atlassian Government Cloud provides:

  • Granular permission controls to manage access across teams and organizations

  • Audit logging for compliance and security monitoring

  • Secure collaboration capabilities within the FedRAMP Moderate environment

4. Data Residency and Compliance

With strict requirements around data sovereignty and controlled unclassified information (CUI) handling, Atlassian Government Cloud is a dedicated environment reserved for U.S. government agencies and their industry partners, ensuring:

  • Data stored exclusively in U.S.-based data centers

  • Access restricted to U.S. persons

  • Support for compliance requirements within the FedRAMP Moderate framework

Real-World Impact

Agencies that have migrated to Atlassian Cloud are reporting measurable benefits, including:

  • Reduced infrastructure burden – No more server maintenance, patching, or weekend outages

  • Faster project delivery with transparent workflows and automated notifications

  • Improved cross-team collaboration between program offices, engineering teams, and mission stakeholders

  • Better executive visibility into portfolio performance and resource allocation

Looking Ahead

Atlassian is committed to meeting additional federal compliance and security standards with future investments such as supporting US government customers' transition to cloud and will have FedRAMP High and Impact Level 5 environments built and ready to be submitted for authorization prior to the end of life for Data Center. Atlassian will share more details about the development timelines soon; keep an eye on the roadmap.
