Control group permissions in Focus ๐ŸŽ‰

Weโ€™re excited to share that the ability to control group permissions is now generally available in Focus โ€” and is enabled by default for all new customers.

With this release, you can bring greater clarity and control to how your teams collaborate in Focus, while also unlocking centralized governance models that will scale with your organization.

Whatโ€™s new

You can now define permissions for different user groups across your focus areas, giving you flexibility to decide:

  • Who can edit and delete a focus area

  • Who can edit important sections like Updates or About

  • Who can connect goals, work and sub-focus areas

  • Who can view sensitive areas, such as funds

This allows you to model real-world ownership structures directly inside Focus, ensuring the right people have the right level of access.

Why this matter

Customers told us they wanted more control to balance governance with collaboration. With these new controls over group permissions, you can:

  • Support centralized governance models across business units or portfolios, ensuring more standardization where it matters

  • Empower teams with differentiated levels of access without compromising oversight

  • Reduce the risk of accidental edits to critical information

  • Provide visibility to stakeholders without overwhelming them with editing rights

megaphone Going forward, your Focus admin will need to determine access for any new groups before they can access Focus.

Examples in practice

Here are a few ways customers are already starting to use control group permissions:

  • Focus area owners: Give leaders full ownership of their area, while allowing their team to contribute to Updates and the About section.

  • OKR transformation teams: Grant a dedicated team permission to manage linked goals, without giving them broad access elsewhere.

  • Finance or portfolio management: Allow a small, privileged group of users to view funds while keeping that information restricted from general contributors.

  • Cross-functional teams: Empower editors to collaborate on updates, while maintaining clear accountability for outcomes at the owner level.

Looking ahead

This release is an important step toward more flexible and powerful permissions in Focus. Weโ€™d love to hear your feedback on how youโ€™re using control group permissions, and what additional improvements would make managing access even easier for your teams.
