We’ve improved the Plan your upgrade experience in the Atlassian Troubleshooting and Support Tools (ATST) app by making it possible to discover and adopt OpenSearch, our recommended search platform for Jira and Confluence.
Switching to OpenSearch gives you faster search and indexing, better scalability, and a more resilient infrastructure. If you're using Jira, you can also reduce your node count and save on hardware costs. Review all OpenSearch benefits:
You can now see if OpenSearch is right for your instance directly in the Plan your upgrade page. The new Switch to OpenSearch (recommended) step appears if your instance meets these conditions:
The version you’re upgrading to supports OpenSearch. OpenSearch is supported for:
Jira 11.2 and later.
Confluence 9.0 and later.
Your instance runs on a multi-node cluster (at least 2 nodes).
Your instance isn’t already using OpenSearch.
This applies to both Jira Data Center and Confluence Data Center.
Switching to OpenSearch is optional, but the timing depends on your current version:
If your current version supports OpenSearch, you can switch before or after you upgrade.
If your current version doesn’t support OpenSearch, first upgrade your instance, then switch to OpenSearch.
Check our OpenSearch configuration guides:
If you’ve already switched to OpenSearch, we’d love to know:
How did it impact your performance, stability, or hardware costs?
How can we make the migration journey or documentation smoother?
If you’re planning your first migration, let us know what additional guidance or tools would help you feel confident making the switch.
