"can't save changes" on any new page created by clicking a red link

Seer Snively May 4, 2020

Here's my situation: Was on Confluence 6.x, migrated to cloud Confluence.

  1. I edit a page and create a [link] using brackets and save that page (note: or I come across a page with a red link that already exists)
  2. I see a red link that I click and it opens a .../create?draftid=... page
  3. As soon as it stops loading, I see next to publish (near the bottom of the screen) a triangle and "Can't save changes", and a moment later, a red box in the upper right that says "The connection timed out".
  4. If I add anything to this page, nothing is saved. If I click 'publish' the wheel spins, but never stops.
  5. If I click close on that page and go look at my 'recent pages', I see a DRAFT with the name of the page I was just editing
  6. If I click on the draft page, that will always seem to load correctly and allow me to publish, but the buttons are on the top right, not the bottom right.

This happens for _every_ page I create. Please fix.

Note: The pages with the publish button on the top don't allow you to add links using the brackets, apparently.

Hello @Seer Snively,

Thank you for bringing up this problem!

The Undefined Page Link feature is the one you are referring to. This feature is unfortunately not yet available in the new Confluence editor, which is the default editor in Confluence Cloud.

Since you mentioned that you edited the page in order to add the undefined page link, I am assuming this is a page that you created previously, using the old Confluence editor. That's why it's still possible for you to create an undefined page link on that page, as it hasn't been converted over to the new editor.

As a result, when you click on the undefined page, Confluence attempts to create the page in the new editor, and fails.

So, it seems that you are running into the following bug:

  • CONFCLOUD-68165 Unable to Create New Pages Using Undefined Page Markup Links in Overview Pages

In addition, there's a feature request to implement Undefined Page Links in the new editor below:

  • CONFCLOUD-67129 Link to an undefined page (a page that doesn't exist yet)

In the meantime, you have a few workarounds, which you can find mentioned on those tickets.

This also explains why you might have the both the old and new editors on your site. If you have any pages that you created when in Confluence Server, then Confluence won't automatically convert them to use the new editor. You can also choose Legacy editor template when creating a new page and it will automatically use the old editor.

I hope this helps, and I'm sorry how this is affecting your productivity. Hopefully, we can see this feature on the new editor in the near future.

Take care,

Shannon

So it's a known bug. Thanks for letting me know.

Quick question aside: I notice the new editor doesn't seem to understand "sections". Is that feature also going away?

Good morning!

Indeed, the new editor doesn't have the same columns, sections, and layouts options as the old editor had.

I am sharing our New Editor Roadmap below, which includes a list of the most missed features that haven't yet been included, and what our plans are for them.

According to this, we have a feature request to improve upon these options, and we're now looking into including this as a candidate for a future roadmap.

If you have any other missing features, and you don't find them on the roadmap page, please let me know and I can tell you anything I know about it.

Thank you,

Shannon

Does anyone know what causes a page to have either of the two editors with the 'Publish' button at the top or bottom of the page?
