i am unable to reset my password. message returned is "an internal error occurred"

Are you resetting your personal Atlassian account password or you work Atlassian account password?
I am betting this is a company account that is managed through SSO and you won't be able to reset it the traditional Atlassian account ways, you have to reset it with the provider you are using, for example Microsoft.
