how do I test an installation?

created new digital ocean droplet,

installed lamp (apache, mysql)

ran  atlassian-confluence-6.14.0-x64.bin

 

browsed to site (sample.com:8090)

and got nothing.

You don't mention any attempt to start Confluence.  I assume you answered "yes" to the question "start confluence?" at the end of the installation process - did that give you any errors?

Have you checked that Confluence is running?   If it is running, or it is trying to start and then shutting down, then what does the log say the problem is?  You can find that in <confluence home>/logs/atlassian-confluence.log
