how do I edit excel document directly within Confluence and save it directly back without having to save it locally and re-upload?

there's also an app called "GoEdit for Confluence" - we are using this one for editing documents. It works really well, but it's not for free.

1. Add the spreadsheet attachment into a Confluence file list.
2. Expand > the file name, click edit
3. Make changes and save
4. Publish/upload changes.

If you are unable to add a file onto a file list page, your space admin will need to grant you attachments add permissions in the space settings.
