Which "confluence app" file?

The installers are not supposed to open automatically, you need to run them and answer some questions to get Confluence installed on your server.  For a Mac, there is no installer though - you need to uncompress the file and configure the system manually (although it can be as simple as editing a couple of files)

I would also like to point out Atlassian's stance on running their apps on Mac, even if it is an older article and specific to Jira. Please review the warning in the yellow rectangle at the top of this page: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jira/installing-jira-on-mac-os-x-191501161.html

You probably want to consider a virtual machine or an Atlassian Cloud trial. Cheers!
