For context, Atlassian has announced changes to how it may use customer metadata and certain in-app data to improve its AI services from 17 August 2026. The controls available to customers appear to vary depending on the subscription   tier and contractual arrangements.

  1. What categories of metadata Atlassian may use for AI model training or improvement purposes.
  2. Whether any of such metadata may contain personal data.
  3. How Atlassian uses the metadata and what specific AI model improvement activities it supports.
  4. Whether information derived from Nium metadata may be incorporated into models, features or services subsequently made available to other customers.

Hello Kondjo,

For definitive legal or DPA compliance answers, you will need to contact Atlassian Support .

In short, Atlassian's policy allows them to use aggregated, de-identified metadata and in-app data to train their AI and features, stripping out personal identifiers first.

https://support.atlassian.com/security-and-access-policies/docs/data-contribution-settings/

https://www.atlassian.com/trust/ai/data-contribution

You can manage your settings under admin.atlassian.com → Security → Data contribution.

Control is strictly tied to your plan: Enterprise tiers can opt out of everything, while Free, Standard, and Premium tiers can only opt out of in-app data, metadata sharing remains mandatory.

Best,

Arkadiusz 🤠
