Would it be possible for you guys to have confluence format automatically when creating file links?

We don't want to attach every file to confluence as we have thousands and it wouldn't make sense.  THis would just be taking up twice the storage.  But you guys haven't made it very easy to link to files though.  As far as I can tell, one has to create a hyperlink in word and paste that in.  Unless they want to manually flip every slash and add the "file://" at the beginning.  We used to use sharepoint and it had no problem with this, the window would pop up, you pasted in your path, and it created a functioning hyperlink.  Why is this so difficult?

Jahn,

You can learn more about this in this Atlassian KB: Cannot link to local files from within Confluence

Here is a different community thread that also provides some work arounds: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/Confluence-How-to-place-a-link-to-a-file-on-a-server-share-in-a/qaq-p/258790
