I've seen many discussions around issues folks are having with cloud-hosted versions of JIRA + Confluence not working in China.

I'm wondering if we moved to a self-hosted instance, could we remove this issue with the Google captcha and then our China team could get access?  Basically wondering if we can remove any google dependencies when self-hosting.

Absolutely.  With self-hosting, you'll need to provide a user directory somewhere.  JIRA and Confluence come with their own embedded ones (a mini-crowd) which they can keep separate or share.  You could run Crowd, or hook them up to any one of several types of LDAP/AD etc.

You also have a lot more configuration freedom, including turning off captcha, running it behind your own firewalls (or not), or even changing the code if you want, including your own directory connectors!
