Why do people think confluence is great? What attracts users?

I would add this:

• Easy to use! It is nearly WYSIWIG
• Documentation isn't only on a local computer from individuals, who can leave a company. The documentation is stored on a server and everybody can access. 
• Easy to adjust with lots of plugins
• Really good community who helps if you have a problem.

A few bits of the top of my head:

• Documentation available through web login even from home (depending on site settings)
• Document collaboration is easy though comments, in-line comments, and editing by multiple people.
• Easy configuration to limit editing and/or view rights.
• Ability to link pages from and to Jira tickets.
