When you rename a space, does that break anything?

We want to rename a space that has hundreds of sub-pages; if we rename the space, when folks go to a sub-page, will they get the "This page has moved" page?

Hi Chela,

You have to differentiate between renaming the SpaceKey and the SpaceName.

In Confluence UI you should only be able to rename the SpaceName. This won't break anything as it is not used in any links, macros, etc.

However renaming the SpaceKey would potentially break a lot within that space, in other spaces pointing to this space, etc. (however this requires some workaround and can't be done in the UI).

Best, Tobias

Which is why the SpaceKey cannot be changed ;-)

Yep, I was referring to just changing the space name, not the key, so I think we're good! Thanks for all the replies.

It depend on how they get to the page.  If they use a url that has the old key in it, then yes, they'll get the page moved thing and a redirect.  If they use the short url or one with the page key in it, then they won't.  Internal links in confluence will take them directly to the page as well.

Chela,

You can rename a space but cannot change the space ID.

Thanks! Will renaming it trigger the "This page has moved" message when navigating to one of the renamed space's child pages?

Chela,

Renaming a space doesn't move anything.

Pages will just have the new space key in the URL for the pages.

@Victor Mutambuki  The Space Key cannot be changed, the Space name can be changed and doesn't change URLs as I understand it. Just want to clarify for future readers.
