Hello,

I'm looking to put Confluence on a private cloud platform. What IaaS/vm do I need to get in order to run it, and can it still be run on premise?

I'm assuming a medium size vm eg 2 x CPUs, 8GB RAM

Do I need to buy Jira first in order to run Confluence? If so, what vm do I need for Jira?

Hi Gareth

Scaling depends on the number of users working on Confluence and the scale of activity. 2x CPUs and 8 GB RAM are a good start for a medium Confluence up to 250 Users I'd say. But it really depends on the usage and users working on Confluence. :)
Maybe you can tell us how many users you will have on the Confluence later on.

Confluence is standalone and no Jira is needed. See here for the pricing:

There are two kinds of Confluence on prem. Server, and Data Center. Data Center allows clustering and a few additional features handy for large deployments.

Hi Niklas,

Thanks for the help. The initial deployment is only to support 20 users with an anticipated fileshare requirement of around 50-100GB so it sounds like I could probably get away with an even smaller server, however, my medium size vm is fine pricewise so I'll stick with that.

Do I need SQL or any other database to support my confluence deployment or is that all part of the product?

Cheers,

Gareth

Hi Gareth

Yes! Confluence relies on a SQL database, it saves page content, the structure of pages, users and settings, etc. there. Without it won't even start up.

You can learn what kind of SQL databases are supported on https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/supported-platforms-207488198.html

Regards
Niklas
