What happens when 2 users are simultaneously editing a Word doc in Confluence?

Does the autosaved drafts, "This page is also being edited by..." and Merge features also work when editing MS Word docs from within Confluence?

Nope. One will overwrite the other. If you feel that may happen you could look into a plugin such as Arsenale Lockpoint - Attachment Checkout so that only one person can work on it at a time.
