Hi

We are using Jira in the cloud and a Confluence server on-premise and I want to understand what happens to the user's accounts when we migrate to Confluence Cloud. e are not using Atlassian Access, or any form of SSO or 2FA.

For example:

  • I have a Jira account in the cloud
  • I have a Confluence account on the server

I migrate the Confluence server to Confluence Cloud.

  • Will I have now have two accounts in the cloud, one for Jira and one for Confluence?
  • Or will I have one account, that can access both Jira and Confluence? If yes
    • Which password will it use, the Jira password or the Confluence password?
    • Will the account have the correct permissions, to both Jira and the newly migrated Confluence Cloud?

Thanks

Hi @Ian Morris , welcome to the Community!

The accounts in Cloud are based on email addresses. When you migrate the Confluence Server accounts up to Cloud, the activity will be associated with the Cloud accounts for the people with the same email addresses.

For this reason, the migration assistant will not migrate users if more than one user on Server has the same email address. Just something to be aware of, as often service or administrator accounts on a local server instance will share a common email.

  • Which password will it use, the Jira password or the Confluence password?

The migrated Confluence site will use the passwords for the Jira site (for accounts that match the email addresses of Jira users). The local Confluence Server passwords will not be used in Cloud.

  • Will the account have the correct permissions, to both Jira and the newly migrated Confluence Cloud?

The Confluence migration won't affect your Jira permissions. If the users are active in Confluence Server, they will be granted product access in Confluence Cloud. (deactivated accounts are imported, but not granted product access). Assuming the Confluence Server users match the email addresses for the Jira Cloud users, you should be set.

Let me know if you need more detail in any area or have further questions!

Cheers,
