What happened to anchors and being able to navigate to another place in the same document?

The new confluence sucks, putting it midly. So many macros were removed. Now, there is no code snippet macro, no anchor macros, can't image map, and most importantly can't anchor a link to another part of the same document.

I like the new simplified UI, but for heaven's sake, why would you remove features from an already troublesome product.

If it weren't for our corporate buy in, I would never use Confluence by choice.

John,

You are correct that the new editor no longer has the anchor link.  Even though there has been a lot of users asking for it to come back Atlassian has not done so yet.  The request to have the returned was closed. https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-66773?_ga=2.136396720.1015144324.1595258341-1624429102.1594443344&error=login_required&error_description=Login+required&state=0cd44fa2-5766-499b-ac98-2c0fdfb4aff1

Atlassian has provided what they call linkable headings which they tell you how to create here: https://support.atlassian.com/confluence-cloud/docs/insert-links-and-anchors/

Yeah, Linkable Headings is the replacement feature, as far as I've heard.
