We have requirement that editing excel sheet in network drive should be automatically sync to confluence page to which this excel sheet belongs.

We have configured network map drive using WebDav for Confluence.

But when end user updates excel sheet in network drive at that time it attach *.tmp and ~$<File Name>.xls as attachment to particular confluence page.

Moreover it automatically updates *.tmp file in office excel macro settings and due to that we got error as show image i.e. " Error rendering macro 'viewxls' ".

So how to restrict *.tmp and ~$<File Name>.xls from being automatically attached?

Hello Khushbu,

Within your explained scenario, Confluence is working as expected. Any files created within the Confluence directory via WebDAV will be ingested as a page or attachment of a page. Ideally, you want to see why the ‘.TMP’ files are being created within that directory instead of locally.

There have been recorded instances where an Antivirus product is the cause of the ‘.TMP’ or ~FileName files being created. Here is a post which discusses such a matter, Excel file Keep create .tmp file.

A workaround to this issue would be as follows:

  1. Locate the file needing editing
  2. Copy the file locally
  3. Complete the edits of the file
  4. Copy the edited file back to the WebDAV path

This workaround would prevent the creating of the ‘.TMP’ and ~FileName files being created within the WebDAV location.

I hope this helps provide a workaround to the creation of the temporary files along with giving direction to find the cause of the creation of the temporary files.
